Electric car and caravan

More and more electric cars are suitable for towing a caravan or folding trailer and developments in this area follow each other in rapid succession. In 2019 there were only a handful of cars that had enough pulling power and had approval to go on the road, in 2021 the number of electric cars with a towbar has expanded considerably.

Depending on the destination and the range (which becomes smaller if you tow a caravan or folding trailer), the electric car is certainly a good alternative as a caravan tower. In this blog we give you an overview of electric models and their towing weight (pulling limit/pulling force). In addition, of course, a number of practical tips, information about charging stations abroad, the Tesla Supercharger network, the electric caravan and campsites with charging stations.

Which electric cars are suitable for towing a caravan or folding trailer? These are the most suitable (and available) cars by brand:

  • BMW iX3 - Maximum towing weight: 750kg
  • Ford Mustang MACH-E - Maximum towing weight: 750kg
  • Jaguar I-Pace - Maximum towing weight: 750kg

Dethleffs electric concept caravan

If your car has a little less pulling power, then the electric caravan from the German brand Dethleffs may be something for you in the near future. The towing weight of the concept eHome Coco (approximately 100 kg) is achieved by 2 electric motors of 54 hp each, which are placed in the wheel hubs. These electric motors can also serve as a caravan mover (handy for home or camping) and the battery can be powered with solar energy from your own panels.

Practical tips

  • Note that the range of your plug-in car decreases when you tow a caravan or folding trailer. How much? That differs per car and the towed weight, but often the range is halved.
  • If you're looking for a charging station, find a place where you don't have to disconnect your caravan
  • There are fewer public charging stations in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. Certainly in comparison with the Netherlands (66,000+ charging points), France (45,000 charging stations) and Germany (44,000+). These 3 countries together have more than 70% of all charging points in Europe. So plan your trip well!

Tesla Supercharger stations

Do you own a Tesla or are you considering buying or leasing one? Then it is good to know that there are now more than 2,500 supercharger stations worldwide with more than 25,000 superchargers. The stations are strategically located at traffic junctions and along national highways, often in combination with food courts or restaurants. Loading is becoming faster and faster and more stations are added so that waiting is limited.
