The wonderful Greece has a lot of islands: Mykonos, Crete, Corfu, Zakynthos, Santorini, and many others... Crystal clear waters and stunning beaches; amazing sceneries abound throughout the islands, which have a true paradise vibe. So, if you are planning your next camping holiday in Greece, continue reading this blog, because here you will find more information about the main islands, transport to and between them + nearby campsites to help you move easily.

Transport to and between the Greek Islands

1. Flights

For example, you can easily buy flight tickets to Zakynthos online and start your camping holiday on one of the islands instead of going through all the hassle of on-land travel. Thus, there are flights to some of the other main Greek Islands, with international flights arriving and departing from Crete, Corfu, and Rhodes.

It is best to check in advance, as certain flights may be seasonal or chartered. You will also need to keep a watch on their newsfeeds for information regarding cheap flights so you don't miss a deal. A flight is a terrific way to reach your first island, but once you're there, you won't need to worry about the heavy luggage, checking in, or travelling to and from the airports, which can occasionally be further away. On the boats that depart from the major ports, you are allowed to bring anything you want, including a car.

2. Cars, campers, buses, and trains

There are various ways to arrive from the mainland to the ferry: by car or camper, by bus, and by train.

  • Cars and campers

Driving around Greece is a great option if you want to explore more of this magnificent destination. Whether you choose to bring your own car or rent one there, it will certainly make your trip more enjoyable.

  • Buses

If you take a bus from Athens, you can reach all the main cities in Greece. There are two main bus stations in Athens: Kifissos and Liossion. From the Kifissos bus station, you can take buses to cities in Greece, and also to the Ionian Islands. From the Liossion bus station, you can reach the Sterea region, the towns of northern Greece, and the island of Evia.

  • Trains

The train network is limited and usually slower, so it is not the preferred method of transportation in Greece. On the flipside, train tickets are often much cheaper than other means of transport, especially if you choose to buy a return ticket, so if you are looking to limit your spend, this is the best way to go.

The most popular Greek Islands for camping

1. Corfu

Whitewashed homes, Byzantine churches, Venetian fortification remnants, and Greek temple ruins can all be found on Corfu. Explore the central Esplanade of the Corfu Town or meander through the historic lanes of the Roman hamlet of Kassiopi. On the banks of the Canal d'Amour, cover yourself in mineral mud for a do-it-yourself spa experience. According to legend, the Nymphes waterfalls used to draw the same-named mythological beauties, who would swarm to the settlement to bathe in the crystal-clear waters. Most of the campsites here are well-equipped, have swimming pools and are located right by the sea.

2. Crete

Greece's largest island appears to offer it all: mouthwatering Greek food, local wineries, history, breathtaking beaches, and charming villages. Explore its magnificent beaches, breathtaking mountain ranges, steep gorges, and the island's rich culinary culture. After all, Crete is a tiny cosmos full of wonders and riches that will likely take a lifetime to discover. The best time to visit Crete is from mid-May to June or from September to October. However, May brings with it warmer waters and beautiful wildflowers that can be spotted throughout the island's natural attractions. Camping in Crete is just fantastic, as the campsites here usually have swimming pools and are dog-friendly. The most popular accommodation types are camping pitches and bungalows.

3. Rhodes

The ancient cities of Kamiros and Ialysos, the mediaeval Old Town, the harbour of Mandraki, the Acropolis of Lindos, and the Valley of the Butterflies... There are so many attractions in Rhodes that just one trip is never enough. Given the breathtaking beauty of its Dodecanese island location, it is unsurprising that Rhodes is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Greece. Here, elegant dining places and traditional tavernas offering regional delicacies live in perfect harmony with vast sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, castles, and the remnants of ancient civilizations. The most popular accommodation types are camping pitches and bungalows. In Rhodes, you can find campsites that provide even glamping possibilities. You can stay in Yala Luxury Canvas Lodges and have everything at your disposal: catering, entertainment, relaxation, and so on.

In contrast to the azure Aegean Sea, Mykonos' distinctive white houses stand out. Mykonos is loaded with great beaches. It's a beach paradise, whether you're looking for swimming, sunbathing, beach resorts, beach parties, or water sports. Paradise, Super Paradise, and Paraga Beaches are the main party beaches, while Ornos and Platis Gialos are great for families and couples. What could be better than camping on this amazing island? Mykonos even has campsites that provide glamping facilities. You can stay in fully furnished tents and have all the facilities at your disposal.

5. Zakynthos

Zakynthos is a well-liked vacation spot in the enchanted Ionian Sea because of its white beaches, sea turtles, and party scene. Zante (Italian name) was referred to by the Venetians as Fiore di Levante, or the Flower of the East, and its affluence and royalty made it the crown jewel of their empire. Zakynthos has beautiful, flower-filled scenery. In June, the weather starts to get really hot, making beaches the ideal place to spend the entire day. Thus, Zakynthos is renowned for its crazy nightlife, especially in the area of Laganas, which has a lot of bars and clubs where things may get wild. In Zakynthos, most of the campsites are well-equipped, have swimming pools and are located right by the sea. Some of the campsites accept dogs.
