To determine what makes a campsite popular, a popularity index was created. This index was developed by examining the number of reviews by municipality, province and for the whole of Italy.
The number of camping reviews per municipality is divided by the largest number of reviews in a municipality. This number is then multiplied by 100. The resulting figure determines the popularity index of an area.
The municipality of Roma Capitale is an example of this. All the campsites in the municipality of Roma Capitale (there are 9) have a total of 19,087 reviews. The municipality with the most reviews is Cavallino-Treporti with 38,038 reviews. The popularity index of Roma Capitale is, therefore:
19,087 / 38,038 * 100 = 50.17, which corresponds to a rounded score of 50.
The popularity index revealed several interesting details. It is clearly visible that municipalities with a high popularity index are located in the Veneto region, with large campsites/holiday parks within their borders.
