Top 10 best kitesurfing destinations in Spain

Spain does not have a distinct windy season, and the wind is reasonably consistent throughout the year. Tarifa and its surrounds are the most famous sites on the Spanish mainland and are famed for the powerful "Levante" and chilly "Poniente" breezes that blow across the beaches, drawing contests and pro riders in droves. Working your way up the east coast of Spain, you'll discover a good range of kiteable beaches, from Andalusia in the south to Northern Catalonia. The Canary Islands, like the mainland, have an outstanding range of kite beaches, with Fuerteventura being the most famous (the clue is in the name; Fuerteventura translates nearly literally to "Strong Wind"). Sotavento's flat water lagoon and Flag Beach's rolling waves are only two examples of what may be discovered on this island group, which is closer to Africa than it is to Europe. The greatest time to go kiting in Spain is from April to October, however, areas may get rather busy during the high season (July-August). Along with a terrific après kite scene, Spanish places typically provide a good selection of additional activities, ranging from tapas on the terrace to all-night fiestas.

1. Tarifa

"European kite capital," "European kite metropolis," we've only heard superlatives for this most southernmost hamlet in Europe, which hosts GKA Kite World Cup events regularly. The Strait of Gibraltar acts as a natural funnel, bringing powerful winds, waves, and a swift current. Take a flight to one of the neighbouring airports of Gibraltar (45 minutes), Jerez (90 minutes), or Málaga (1 hour 45 minutes), or drive or travel along a lovely road through Extremadura or along the coast. From April to November, a beautiful sandy beach of 10 kilometres welcomes you (less busy from April-June and September-November). There are two primary places for kitesurfing near Tarifa : the long, broad Playa de Los Lances beach and the smaller Valdevaqueros Beach, which provides excellent kiting conditions independent of wind direction. Other excellent beaches include those at Conil, El Palmar, and Canos de Meca. This is your kitesurfing vacation location, with about 300 days of wind and sunlight per year, a stylish fisherman's community, Sevilla, Cordoba, Jerez, and Cadiz all nearby. Tangana Bungalows provides surfer-style bungalows right off Valdevaqueros Beach if you're looking for a nice spot to stay on Valdevaqueros Beach. For those looking to improve their skills or start kitesurfing, Radikite offers top-notch lessons and guidance.

2. El Médano, Tenerife

Tenerife (Canary Islands) is easily accessible, with charter flights from nearly every major airport in Europe. The island is not only easily accessible, but it also has a beautiful year-round temperature, excellent cuisine, and plenty of wind, making it one of Europe's top kite locations. El Médano bay is adjacent to Tenerife Airport and is appropriate for motorcyclists of all skill levels. Summer winds are the strongest and most dependable, but with average temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius all year, winter, spring, and fall are more relaxed and just as excellent. Kite & Surf Center Playa Sur in El Médano, a family company started in 1980, is the place to go for instruction and equipment rentals. They have plenty of sails of all sizes already rigged (three times as many sails as available boards)!

Have you ever thought of camping in the Canaries? On the other hand, Camping Nauta has huge swimming pools, unique green villas, tennis courts, and a sports area.

3. Costa Brava/ Sant Pere Pescador

Sant Pere Pescador is the principal kitesurfing beach in the entire harbour, with a broad and sandy beach that provides ideal conditions for kitesurfing all year. There are three official kitesurfing zones in this area, as kitesurfing should only be done in designated zones during the high season. In the summer, the site "Sant Pere Pescador" is characterised by the strong Tramuntana wind from the Pyrenees and consistent sea breezes from the southeast.

Because the wind is either offshore when the Tramuntana is blowing or onshore when the thermal wind is blowing, the area north of the Bay of Roses is not ideal for kitesurfing. So, if you're interested in kitesurfing, we recommend looking for a spot to stay further south. From Empuriabrava onwards further south you have a big variety of Camping Sites and Bungalow Parks.

4. Galicia

Galicia is a fascinating region that few people are aware of. It is Spain's most northern state. It is located immediately above Portugal on the map. Galicia is known for its untouched landscape, isolated beaches, blue seawater, and ideal kitesurfing conditions. Despite winds of up to 25 knots, just one kitesurfer was on the sea. Every day was the same. The water is yours in Galicia, and the only company you'll have—if you're lucky—are dolphins. Whether you're searching for big waves or flat water, Ancoradoiro, Traba, Playa de Area Maior, Ra de Abelleira, Rostro, or Carnota have the right kite spot for you.

5. Barcelona

Next to Barcelona, the most popular kitesurfing sites are Castelldefels, Stiges, St. Pere Pescadors, Empuriabrava, and Tarragona, with rentals and training available for novices. Mojokite at Castelldefels, south of the city, is the most well-known kitesurfing Barcelona location. If you are willing to drive 1.5 hours north to the Northern Costa Brava coast, you may visit the picturesque Gulf of Roses. Sant Pere Pescador Beach is one of Spain's top kitesurfing sites. During the summer, it receives the Tramuntana breeze from the Pyrenees.

Badalona, the most popular windsurfing destination, is about 10 kilometres from the city centre. This beach, which has three windsurfing clubs, is very uncrowded by Barcelona standards.

6. Fuerteventura

Spot Sotavento is located on the Jandia Peninsula in the southern portion of the island of Fuerteventura. This Spanish island is situated in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean. The weather is pleasant all year, and if there isn't enough wind for kiting, there are waves for surfing and other sports. In any case, you will see amazing mountain scenery and constantly enjoy the breathtaking views.

7. Famara

The Canaries are well-known for their excellent kitesurfing conditions. Especially at the beach of Famara on the island of Lanzarote, which may be one of the greatest sites on the planet to kitesurf regardless of skill level. It's ideal for novices because it's safe. Famara features a large beach with no rocks and a strong, consistent breeze, making it ideal for experienced kiters. The number of competitions hosted there each year, such as the World Tour, the Spanish Championship, and the State Cup attests to this.

8. Lanzarote

Lanzarote's kitesurfing is wonderful all year, although it becomes better in the summer. Conditions are regarded as excellent because of the mild year-round weather and sea temperature, the waves, consistent wind, and breathtaking scenery, as well as the fact that it is just a four-hour flight from anywhere in Europe.

Kitesurfing is one of the easiest water sports to learn. It is less difficult to learn than windsurfing and surfing. It's easier to transport equipment than most other water sports, and it's a lot of fun. Lanzarote offers very steady summer breezes, which allow for kitesurfing on most days. Consistent circumstances provide several opportunities for you to learn about this intriguing activity. Different kite beaches in Lanzarote benefit from varying wind directions and intensity.

9. Ibiza

Ibiza Town is a wonderful spot for kitesurfing in the spring and summer due to thermal breezes, and in the winter due to high winds and storms. Your Ibiza holiday can be full of adrenaline! The only issue is that beaches are closed during the bathing season, and kitesurfing is only permitted from November to May. The winds shift further to the west, southwest, northwest, and north, with speeds ranging from 15knt to 30knt. Winter thermal winds do not work, yet they are fairly strong since people rely more on storms. The most typical kite lengths range from 5 to 8 metres. The coldest months are January and February, with an average temperature of 15 degrees Celsius that varies depending on the direction of the wind.

10. Somo Beach, Pedreña in Cantabria

Somo Beach is a long beach with lots of areas for practice. In the summer, kite surfing is restricted to the west side of the beach, where there are no swimmers or surfers (surf is king on this beach). With Western or Northwestern winds, this tucked-away location isn't ideal because Santander acts as a screen.

From September onwards, you can use the entire beach. The best wind direction is ENE, whereas Western breezes should only be used by experienced kite surfers.

Pedreña's location offers excellent views and is about 20 minutes from Santander Airport.

Because it is situated on a vast river that drains into a bay, this location is level and works well with south breezes. Because it is only 2 kilometres west of Somo, you may use the same prediction as for Somo. It works in all breezes, but be cautious with weak tides because rocks may appear, which may be harmful. There are also a lot of pleasure boats, so be cautious or do this on off-season days.
