Yes, it was a 20-year wait. But soon it's here: a Total Solar Eclipse 2026 on the European continent. On 12 August 2026 the eclipse will be visible in large parts of Iceland and Spain and a small part in the very northeastern part of Portugal. A partial eclipse will cover more than 90% of the sun in Ireland, Great Britain, Portugal, France, Italy and the Balkans.
Start of the total eclipse in Iceland is 16:43:17 (Ísafjörður). Start of the total eclipse in Spain is 20:26:47 (Gijón). Start of the total eclipse in Portugal is 19:30:21 (Aveleda e Rio de Onor). All local times.
While most camping guests in Spain will stay at one of the many campsites on the Costa Dorada, Costa del Azahar and Costa de Valencia for those who'll want total darkness during the event we've listed all the national parcs and biosphere reserves within the path of totality.
While the centre of the path of totality will be above sea, these touristic regions are located between the central line and the East limit of the total eclipse: Westfords, Snaefellsness Peninsula, Reykjanes Peninsula (and the Reykjavik capital, 17:48:12), Kirkjufell Mountain national park, Einkunnir Natural Park, Vatnsfjörður.
Iceland is closest to the point of maximum eclipse (located just outside Breiðafjörður Bay) which offers the longest duration of totality (2min and 18sec), maximizing the eclipse experience. Iceland has limited (camping) availability, so book early! Here's an Total Solar Eclipse 2026 - Iceland of Iceland campings within the eclipse path.
Travelers enjoying the green coasts (and clear, non-polluted skies of Galicia will be the first to witness the eclipse, while the bohemian crowds in Ibiza will experience this rare and extraordinary opportunity a couple of minutes later. These Spanish regions lie (from west to east) within the path of totality. From west to east: Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Comunidad de Madrid, País Vasco, La Rioja, Navarra, Aragón, Comunidad Valenciana, Cataluña, Islas Baleares.
If you favour city-life and want to experience the solar eclipse from a city location, head to A Coruña, Valencia, Zaragoza, Palma or Bilbao. Note that both Madrid and Barcelona will be just outside the path of totality.
Fingers crossed. If the weather helps a bit and 12 August has clear blue skies, then you may want to visit a national park or biosphere and gaze at the stars and planets just after the sky suddenly darkened and the temperature dropped a bit.
The path of the 2026 solar eclipse goes through an amazing constellation of national parks and biospheres in Spain.
